Greenpeace occupying the site of proposed U.S. radar

17.5.2008

Members of Greenpeace have occupied the spot height 718 in the military territory Brdy, where the proposed U.S. radar should be based. The organization thereby protests the planned emplacement of military equipment in such a unique nature.

The occupation started on 28.04. Approximately 20 activists, including some Austrians, built tents, others settled in the treetops. So called “totem of freedom” has been erected. The activists also stretched in the height between the trees a huge cloth with a symbol of target.

Greenpeace wants to stay there as long as necessary. The locals support them. They have been already visited by journalists, deputies, popular singer Monika Načeva and other people, including the mayor of nearby village Trokavec Jan Neoral (politically independent), who is one of the leading figures in the civil struggle against the American radar.

The military police has been monitoring the situation, but did not intervene.
